The LUANG XS lamp by FARO is a table lamp designed for those looking for something different from the usual. It is not a lamp with industrial lines nor a catalogue Nordic piece. The shade is made entirely of papyrus, with no internal structure. This means that when it is switched on, the entire surface lights up uniformly, with a warm and diffuse glow reminiscent of filtered natural light. The beige colour of the shade reinforces this effect: the light it emits is organic, soft, without harsh contrasts.

FARO is a local manufacturing company with a track record in the design of interior luminaires. The Luang collection was born from the observation of art and craftsmanship from Southeast Asia, particularly the way in which complex volumetric forms are constructed from flat materials such as papyrus and other natural fibres.

Installation and specifications

To use this lamp, simply place it on a stable surface: a side table, a desk, or a shelf. It requires no fixed electrical installation or intervention in the ceiling or wall. Before inserting the bulb, make sure the cable is unplugged. Use only an E14 LED bulb with a maximum power of 8 W. The compatible voltage is 100 V to 240 V, so it works in different contexts without additional adapters.

The papyrus shade must not be cleaned with damp cloths or liquid products. To remove dust, use a dry cloth or a soft brush. The steel structure with a black finish can be cleaned with a slightly damp cloth and dried immediately. Avoid placing the lamp near direct sources of moisture or in areas exposed to splashes.

Design and use

The Luang collection starts from a concrete idea: to transfer to contemporary design the artisanal logic of building volume from flat surfaces. In Southeast Asia, craftsmen work papyrus and other natural fibres to create objects that appear light but have a considerable formal presence. That same tension between lightness and form is what defines this lamp.

The shade has no frame. It is formed solely from papyrus, which gives it a free, almost living appearance that changes slightly depending on the angle from which it is viewed. When the lamp is off, the shade has a matte and neutral appearance. When switched on, the light passes through the material and the entire shade becomes luminous. It is this effect that makes this piece work well even in spaces with sufficient general lighting: it does not compete with other light sources, it complements them.

The structure is made of steel in black. This contrast between the rigidity of the metal and the organic texture of the papyrus is not accidental. It reinforces the idea that two different languages — industrial minimalism and natural craftsmanship — can coexist in the same object without either cancelling out the other. The result has something of a ceramic piece in its tactile character, even though the materials are completely different. It is not a golden lamp nor a generic white design lamp. It has a visual identity closer to something handmade, even though it comes from a controlled manufacturing process.

In terms of use, it fits well on a bedside table in a bedroom, where the diffuse light and the beige tone create an atmosphere that invites rest. It also works on a desk, although it is not intended as a high-intensity work lighting source. Its strong point is ambient light: the kind that defines the character of a corner without dazzling or dominating the space.

In the living room, placed on a side table or a console, it provides that second plane of light that makes an interior look complete. In the dining room, on a side table or a sideboard, it can function as a complement to a main suspended lamp. It does not need to be the centre of attention to fulfil its function. Sometimes it is enough for it simply to be there, switched on, for the space to change in character.

It combines well with natural materials such as wood, linen, or rattan. It also works well with more contemporary interiors where black steel is a recurring element. It is not a vintage piece in the strict sense, but neither is it a lamp with a cold aesthetic. It sits at that midpoint that allows it to be integrated into different contexts without looking out of place.

Questions and answers

Is the papyrus shade fragile or does it deform with normal use?

Papyrus is a natural material with a certain structural rigidity. Since it has no internal frame, the shade can be sensitive to direct impacts or pressure, but under normal conditions of use — on a side table or a desk — it maintains its shape without any problem. It is advisable to avoid areas with strong air currents.

Is the E14 LED bulb included of a standard type or does it have any special requirements?

The bulb is not included and must be purchased separately. It is necessary to use an E14 base LED bulb with a maximum power of 8 W. Exceeding that power is not recommended, in order to protect the papyrus shade and ensure correct operation.

Can the weight of 1.67 kg cause instability on small surfaces?

The lamp has a base designed for table use and a weight distributed in a balanced way. On a standard-sized firm side table or surface, it presents no stability problems. On very small or uneven surfaces, it is advisable to check that the base is fully supported.
