BU-OH is an outdoor wall light series designed by the Catalan studio Estudi Ribaudí for the brand FARO. The name is no coincidence: the shape of the lamp directly recalls the eyes of an owl, with two light sources looking outward from a compact matte white housing.

This wall light works well at house entrances, covered terraces, patios and façades. It doesn't need much space to install — at just 90 mm deep, it fits walls with little projection. It emits light from all four sides, allowing wide illumination without leaving shadowed areas.

FARO is a Spanish company with decades of experience in lighting. Their products combine careful design with materials built to last, both indoors and outdoors.

Installation and specifications

Before installing the wall light, make sure the wall is clean and level. The wiring must be switched off at the electrical panel throughout the entire installation. If the wall is brick or concrete, use plugs and screws appropriate for the weight of the fixture. For outdoor installations, check that the connections are well protected from moisture. If you have any doubts about the wiring, the safest option is to call an electrician.

To clean the aluminium housing, use a soft, slightly damp cloth. Avoid abrasive products or solvents that could damage the matte white finish. The opal PC diffuser is cleaned the same way — without scrubbing hard. Do not disassemble it to clean the inside unless necessary. Periodically check that no dirt has accumulated around the wall fixing point.

Design and use

The BU-OH wall light has a shape that catches the eye effortlessly. Two round openings on the front emit warm integrated LED light, and the matte white aluminium housing gives it a clean, recognisable look. It doesn't look like a conventional lamp: it has its own character, without being excessive.

The warm 3000K light is soft and even. Projected from all four sides of the fixture, it illuminates both the wall and the surrounding area without creating harsh contrasts or areas with poor visibility. For a façade, a terrace or a house entrance, that kind of balanced lighting makes the space look tidy and welcoming when night falls.

The body is aluminium, a material that holds up well in outdoor conditions: temperature changes, humidity, everyday abrasion. The matte white finish is not a simple varnish — it is part of the design and is intended to maintain its appearance over time with basic cleaning. The polycarbonate opal diffuser distributes the light without directly exposing the LED source, which prevents glare and produces a softer visual result.

The lamp comes with the integrated 12W LED light source, ready to connect. There is no need to look for compatible bulbs or worry about the socket. With an input voltage between 100V and 240V, it works without adapters in any standard installation.

The dimensions are compact: 219 mm tall, 155 mm long and 90 mm deep. This makes it suitable for walls where there is not much free space, or where a bulky fixture would look out of proportion. Despite the compact size, the light reaches the ground and sides well thanks to the four-directional distribution.

In terms of style, the Estudi Ribaudí design fits well with white or grey façades, light stone walls and modern finishes. It can also work alongside more rustic elements if the rest of the surroundings has simple lines. On a terrace with plants and wooden flooring, or at the entrance of a home with smooth walls, the wall light integrates without forcing any particular style.

If two units are installed symmetrically on either side of a door, the visual effect is that of a contemporary access lantern. It can also be used as a single fixture in passageways, gardens or patios, where the goal is functional lighting with a good presence.

It does not include a motion sensor or presence detector, but its design and size are compatible with installations where switching is controlled from an interior switch or an external timer. If direct sunlight falls on the wall where it is installed, the aluminium handles the heat well without warping or losing its finish.

Questions and answers

Does the BU-OH lamp emit light only to the front or also to the sides?

It emits light from all four sides, not just the front. This means it illuminates both the wall where the fixture is mounted and the space around it, providing wider coverage than a lamp with a front-only diffuser.

Is it necessary to buy the bulb separately for this wall light?

No. The 12W LED light source is already integrated into the luminaire. There is no socket or bulb compartment — the light source is part of the body of the fixture and is not user-replaceable.

Does the matte white finish on the aluminium body hold up well to sun and rain exposure outdoors?

Aluminium is a material suitable for outdoor use and handles temperature changes and humidity well. The matte white finish is applied to the lamp body and is maintained with basic periodic cleaning. Prolonged direct sun exposure does not compromise the structure, although it is recommended to avoid areas with extreme humidity without additional protection.
