Overview

The SUMBA S lamp by FARO is a table lamp designed for interior spaces where a warm and characterful atmosphere is sought. The rattan shade allows light to pass through in a filtered way, creating a soft effect on the walls and ceiling without being too intense. It is an option that works well as a bedside lamp in a bedroom, on a work desk, or as a complementary light source in a living room or dining room.

The matte black steel body provides stability and a clean finish. The rattan adds natural texture that contrasts well with smooth surfaces. Together, the two materials form a combination that does not draw too much attention, but is certainly noticeable when lit.

FARO is a Spanish company with decades of experience in lighting. It designs and manufactures luminaires for residential use and for hospitality projects: hotels, restaurants, and rest spaces. SUMBA S is part of that line oriented towards environments where atmosphere matters as much as functionality.

Installation and specifications

This luminaire is placed directly on a flat surface: a bedside table, desk, sideboard, or any piece of furniture that supports the weight and has access to a nearby outlet. No fixed electrical installation is required. Simply place it, connect the cable to the mains, and add an E27 LED bulb of up to 15 W, which is not included. For a warmer result, it is recommended to use an LED bulb with a color temperature between 2700 K and 3000 K.

The rattan shade can be cleaned with a dry or slightly damp cloth, without abrasive products or excess water. The matte black steel body can be wiped with a soft cloth to prevent dust from accumulating on the base and neck. It should not be exposed to prolonged humidity or direct contact with liquids. When changing the bulb, make sure the lamp is disconnected from the power supply and that the previous bulb has cooled down.

Design and use

The SUMBA S collection stems from a simple idea: to use rattan as the main material in a table lamp without making it look cluttered. The FARO Lab design balances the natural with the contemporary, and the result is a luminaire that fits into various interior styles without forcing anything.

The base and support are made of matte black steel. This finish is discreet and does not accumulate annoying glare. The bedside table, desk, or living room furniture is not dominated by the lamp; rather, the piece integrates as part of the whole. The rattan shade has a shape that allows light to exit diffusely to the sides and downward, generating a warm and defined pool of light.

In a bedroom, this lamp works very well on the bedside table. The light it produces is sufficient for reading without being harsh, and the rattan texture casts soft shadows that add depth to the space. On a double bedside setup, two SUMBA S units create a balanced and uniform composition on both sides of the bed.

In the living room, it can be placed on a side table or in a corner next to a sofa. It provides a complementary light point that breaks the uniformity of general lighting. It also works in a dining room when used on a side sideboard, where it enhances the atmosphere without replacing the main luminaire.

On a desk, it provides working light on a more intimate scale. It is not a high-power technical lamp, but a light source that creates a focused environment without feeling cold or clinical. On a work table in the bedroom, it combines both functions of the space without clashing.

Rattan as a material has a long history in interior design, and in recent years it has made a strong comeback in more refined versions. SUMBA S takes advantage of that trend without fully surrendering to the rustic: the black of the steel modernizes the whole and distances it from the purely artisanal. The result can be described as contemporary with an organic touch.

In hospitality projects, such as hotel rooms or rest areas in restaurants, this table lamp responds well to the need to create recognizable but non-jarring atmospheres. The bedside table in a hotel room, for example, is a constant point of contact with the guest, and a well-resolved light there makes a real difference in the perception of the space.

The lamp is compatible with the standard electrical grid in Europe and in many other markets, thanks to its voltage range of 100 V to 240 V. This facilitates its use in different countries without the need for power adapters.

Questions and answers

Does the SUMBA S lamp include the E27 LED bulb in the package?

No, the bulb is not included. The lamp accepts any E27 LED bulb of up to 15 W. To achieve a warm light that pairs well with the rattan, an LED bulb between 2700 K and 3000 K is recommended.

Does the rattan shade affect the amount of light the table lamp emits?

Yes, the shade filters and diffuses the light, reducing its direct intensity. This is precisely what creates the soft, filtered atmosphere that characterizes this lamp. It is not designed as a general lighting source, but as ambient or supplementary light.

Can the 1.67 kg weight be an issue on a narrow bedside table?

The weight is well distributed across the steel base, which gives the luminaire stability. On a bedside table with a firm and flat surface, it poses no problem. You simply need to make sure there is enough space for the 210 mm diameter of the base.
