LUANG is a floor lamp designed by Faro Lab and locally manufactured under the FARO brand. It is intended for living rooms, bedrooms and dining rooms where an ambient light source with its own character is desired. It is not a task or intensive reading lamp: its main function is to create a warm, enveloping atmosphere in the corner where it is placed.

What sets it apart is the combination of a steel structure with very clean lines and a frameless papyrus shade. With no internal structure, the shade lights up completely when switched on, and the beige tone of the papyrus filters the light gently. The result is an organic light that produces no harsh spots or abrupt contrasts.

FARO is a company with a long track record in interior lighting design. Its Faro Lab line explores natural materials and artisanal processes, combining them with contemporary structures. LUANG is one of the models that best represents that way of working.

Installation and specifications

This floor lamp requires no fixed installation or tools. It rests directly on the floor and plugs into any standard outlet. Compatibility with voltages between 100V and 240V makes it suitable for use in different countries without an adapter. When positioning it, it is advisable to choose a spot away from walkways to prevent the cable from being in a location where someone could trip over it. No wall or ceiling anchoring is required.

The papyrus shade requires delicate maintenance. To clean it, simply use a dry cloth or a soft brush to remove dust. Water or damp products should not be used on the papyrus, as the material may deform. The black steel body can be cleaned with a slightly damp cloth. The bulb is not included: an E27 socket, LED type, of up to 15W is required.

Design and use

The LUANG collection was born from observing how in Southeast Asia plant fibres and papyrus are worked to create everyday objects. What interests the Faro Lab designers most is not imitating that aesthetic superficially, but understanding the process: how from flat, flexible materials, forms are built with volume, movement and presence. That logic is what lies behind the shade of this floor lamp.

The shade has no internal structure. It is made solely of papyrus, which gives it a free form, slightly irregular, that changes depending on the angle from which it is viewed. That irregularity is not a defect: it is part of the design. When the lamp is on, the light passes through the papyrus uniformly, with no points of concentration. The light it emits is diffuse, soft, with a warm tone due to the beige colour of the material.

The body is made of black steel, with a very restrained geometry. The contrast between the rigidity of the metal and the organic nature of the shade is deliberate. The structure is slim and does not take up visual space: what you see is the shade, which is the centrepiece.

With a height of 1530 mm, this floor lamp has a clear vertical presence within the room. It does not go unnoticed, but neither does it compete with other elements in the space. It works well next to a sofa in the living room, beside the bed in the bedroom, or in a corner of the dining room where warmth is desired without installing anything on the ceiling.

In more neutral spaces, such as a wide hallway or a reading area, it can act as a focal point. In interiors with light wood furniture or natural tones, the beige shade integrates effortlessly. It can also work as a contrast in spaces with darker finishes, where the warm light it emits adds visual warmth to the environment.

The aesthetic of LUANG is neither modern in the most technological sense of the word, nor old in the decorative sense. It is a lamp with its own language, rooted in materials of artisanal origin and brought into a contemporary context. For those renovating a living room or reorganising a bedroom, it is an option that brings something different without the need for major changes to the rest of the space.

In bathrooms or kitchens, where materials must withstand a certain level of humidity, this type of shade is not the most suitable choice. It is conceived for dry spaces where lighting serves an ambient function. For those damp areas, other options from the brand are worth considering.

Questions and answers

Does the papyrus shade retain its shape over time or does it deform?

Papyrus is a natural material and can be affected by humidity or intense heat. Under normal indoor use conditions, in dry spaces and with an LED bulb of up to 15W, the shade retains its shape without issue. It is important not to install it in areas with high humidity, such as a bathroom or near the kitchen.

What type of bulb is needed and where can it be obtained?

The lamp uses an E27 socket, which is the most common on the market. The maximum power is 15W and the source type is LED. This bulb format is easily found in any lighting store or large retailer. The bulb is not included with the purchase.

Is the black steel structure sturdy or can it bend with use?

The body is made of steel, which gives it sufficient stability to support the weight of the shade without deforming. With a net weight of 1.67 kg, the lamp is lightweight and easy to move, but its base is designed to remain stable on the floor under normal conditions of use.
