Overview

SMILE is a wall light designed by Jordi Busquets for the brand FARO. What makes this lamp special is its ability to adapt to two different situations depending on how it is oriented. In the vertical position it acts as an ambient light, projecting diffuse illumination that adds warmth to the space without drawing too much attention. In the horizontal position it becomes a practical, well-focused reading lamp.

This wall light fits well in a bedroom, living room or hallway, and can also be used in a bathroom if the installation falls outside the protection zones. Its matte white finish and clean geometry make it compatible with many types of interiors, from the simplest to those seeking a more considered design touch.

FARO is a Spanish company with decades of experience in interior and exterior lighting. Its products combine aesthetic judgement with real functionality, designed for those looking for a lamp that makes sense within the space where they live.

Installation and specifications

To install this wall light it is necessary to have a recessed box in the wall or a firm surface on which to fix the base. The fixing is directly onto the wall, so it is advisable to mark the anchor points carefully before drilling. It is recommended that the electrical installation be carried out by an electrician or a person with basic wiring knowledge. The lamp does not include a light source, so an LED bulb with an E27 base of up to 15 W must be purchased separately.

The steel body in matte white finish does not require special products for maintenance. Simply clean the surface with a dry or slightly damp cloth. Avoid abrasive products or solvents that could damage the finish. Before cleaning the wall light, always disconnect the power to avoid any electrical risk.

Design and use

The SMILE wall light has a steel structure that gives it solidity without adding unnecessary weight. Weighing less than one kilogram, it is easy to handle during installation and does not require a particularly reinforced anchor. Its depth of 132 mm means it protrudes just the right amount from the wall — enough for the bulb to be well oriented without taking up too much space in the room.

The adjustable design is the central feature of this lamp. Its ability to rotate makes it a versatile solution that is not common in a conventional wall light. In the bedroom, for example, placed next to the headboard in the horizontal position it works as a reading light without disturbing the other side of the bed. If turned to the vertical position, the same lamp becomes part of the general lighting of the room, providing a more diffuse, ambient light.

In the living room it can serve a decorative function while also illuminating a specific corner. In the dining room, a pair of SMILE wall lights on either side of a painting or mirror can create a balanced visual effect. In the kitchen, fixed near a work area, it is useful for supplementing the main lighting without taking up counter space.

In hallways, where lighting is often scarce or poorly thought out, this wall light can make a real difference. Installed at mid-height, in the vertical position, it projects light upwards and downwards, making the hallway appear wider and better lit.

The matte white finish is one of the easiest to integrate into any environment. It combines well with light-coloured walls, natural wood furniture, metallic elements in black or grey, and also with more neutral palettes. It does not impose a particular style, which gives the freedom to surround it with different materials and finishes without it looking out of place.

In bathrooms and larger bathrooms it can also have its place, as long as the protection zones established for electrical installations in spaces with water are respected. Next to the bathroom mirror, in the horizontal position, it provides frontal lighting that is very practical for daily grooming.

Compatibility with E27 LED bulbs is a practical advantage. This type of bulb is easy to find, has a long service life and allows you to choose from different colour temperatures depending on the effect you want to achieve. For a warmer atmosphere, a temperature of around 2700K gives good results. For a more neutral and functional light, tones around 4000K can be chosen.

Questions and answers

Can the orientation of the wall light be changed once installed, or does it remain fixed in one position?

Yes, the adjustable design of SMILE allows the position of the head to be changed without needing to remove the wall light from the wall. It can be alternated between the vertical position, for ambient light, and the horizontal position, for reading light, depending on the need of the moment.

What type of bulb does it require and what is the maximum permitted wattage?

This wall light uses bulbs with an E27 base, which is one of the most common bases on the market. The maximum permitted wattage is 15 W. The bulb is not included and must be purchased separately. It is recommended to use an LED bulb to make better use of energy consumption.

Does the voltage range of 100V–240V mean it can be used in any country without an adapter?

Yes. Being compatible with the voltage range of 100V to 240V, this wall light works on both European electrical networks and those of other countries without the need for any additional adapter or transformer.
