Overview

AKANE is a collection of table lamps designed by Pepe Llaudet for FARO, manufactured in Spain. The collection includes two formats: a small table lamp and a larger one, both convertible into floor lamp elements. This particular lamp fits well in the living room, on a side table, or as a complementary light source in different corners of the home.

The design is inspired by Eastern culture. That influence is evident in the choice of materials: a steel body in a matte black finish and a papyrus diffuser in a beige tone. The combination is calm, without stridency, and integrates well in both contemporary settings and spaces with a more classic or Nordic touch.

FARO is a Spanish brand with decades of experience in interior and exterior lighting. Their products combine their own manufacturing criteria with collaborations with independent designers, resulting in pieces with their own character without sacrificing functionality.

Installation and specifications

No tools or anchors are required to install this lamp. As a table lamp, simply place it on a flat, stable surface — such as a side table, sideboard, or desk — and connect it to the power supply. Before connecting it, check that the voltage of your installation is within the indicated range. The bulb is not included: you will need an E27 socket bulb with a maximum power of 15 W. Using a compatible LED bulb is recommended to reduce energy consumption and heat generated.

To clean the steel body, use a dry or slightly damp cloth. Avoid abrasive products or solvents that could damage the matte black finish. The papyrus diffuser requires more care: do not wet it or use damp cloths on it. Simply remove dust with a dry cloth or a soft brush. Do not leave the lamp switched on for extended periods without a bulb installed.

Design and use

The AKANE lamp by FARO starts from a clear idea: to bring the calm and sobriety of Eastern aesthetics into an everyday object. The result is a table lamp that does not compete with the rest of the space, but integrates into it discreetly.

The body, made of steel with a matte black finish, has a firm presence without appearing visually heavy. Matte black absorbs ambient light and avoids reflections, giving the whole piece a more uniform and understated appearance. It is a finish that ages well and does not easily show fingerprints.

The beige papyrus diffuser is the element that connects this lamp to its cultural reference. Papyrus, as a material, has a natural texture that filters light in a particular way: it softens it and gives it a warm tone, without being excessively golden or too cold. This diffused light is ideal for environments where relaxation is sought, such as the living room in the afternoon or a bedside table in the bedroom.

The lamp's dimensions — 350 mm in height and 280 mm at its base — make it suitable for medium-sized surfaces. It fits well on a side table in the dining room, on a work desk, or as a secondary light element in the living room next to a reading area. It does not take up too much space and its proportions are balanced.

The AKANE collection also includes a larger version, and both pieces can be used as floor lamp elements when combined with a suitable base. This allows the height of the light source to be adapted to the needs of each space, which is useful when the available side table is low or when a wider area needs to be illuminated from the floor.

In terms of style combinations, the lamp works well with natural materials such as light wood, rattan, or wicker, which reinforce its Eastern reference without feeling forced. It also pairs well with more neutral surfaces, such as white or grey walls, where the contrast of the black body becomes more apparent. In a dining room with a dark wood table, it provides a light counterpoint. In a living room with a sofa in earth tones, it almost goes unnoticed — which in this case is a compliment.

Compatibility with E27 socket LED bulbs makes it adaptable to current market options. An 8 or 10 W LED with a warm colour temperature, between 2700 and 3000 K, would be the most coherent choice with the character of the collection.

Questions and answers

Is the papyrus diffuser durable or does it deteriorate with use?

Papyrus is a natural material that can deteriorate if exposed to moisture or frequent handling. To keep it in good condition, simply clean it with a dry cloth and avoid placing the lamp in areas with high humidity or near water sources.

Can this lamp also be used as a floor lamp?

Yes. The AKANE collection is designed so that both the small and large models can be used as floor lamp elements when combined with a suitable base. In its standard configuration, it functions as a table lamp.

Does the E27 socket accept any type of LED bulb on the market?

It accepts any LED bulb with an E27 socket and a maximum power of 15 W. The lamp does not include a bulb, so one must be purchased separately. A warm light option is recommended to maintain the atmosphere the design proposes.
